Accepting portal updates and changing the terms of your application are not the same. Many many schools do not allow you to change your application from TO to submit scores. Do your homework. Unless it has rolling admissions it is worth waiting for new scores.

he can do the common app in august - that's a good thing to do!
then add SAT in first week of September and submit.
if you want to submit some places and not others, you can do that. but dont submit and then update - that's a surefire way to screw yourself

I'm not going through 100+ college websites. OP should check each school on the list. Here is one random example, Tufts: "Prior to submitting the application, we ask students whether or not they want test scores to be included with the review of their application. Once students submit their application for admission, the answer selected in the application cannot be changed. We encourage students to have thoughtful conversations about this decision prior to the submission of the application with school counselors and educators who are advising them."
Most schools accept portal updates, but as I mentioned above, not all schools accept self-reported scores to begin with - some require an official score report. This is a separate issue from whether or not the school allows a student to change from test optional to reporting a score.
Interesting, I was under impression it was rare but I guess not. Mine applied to mostly high reaches and all slopes portal updates. I think they allow the change, but maybe I’m wrong on that.

Whether you can change your mind about applying test optional varies by college. Not all colleges allow students to change from test optional to reporting a test score.
There is no advantage to submitting before August SAT scores are released on Sept 5th. Not even for rolling schools, which by their nature tend to be easier for admission.
Encourage him to simply wait until Sept 5th to submit.
Also note that not all colleges even accept scores submitted in the app. Some require an official score report from College Board to consider scores. Check college websites.

My kid wants to get his applications in soon. probably before school starts or at least before his August SAT scores. His last SAT score is not something that he would want to report. How easy is it to change your mind under the applications for all of the schools if you choose to not report your SAT scores? But then get a better score and change your mind and want to report it.
