We’ve had reliably fun vacations since our kids were 10 and 7.

I had so much fun taking long road trips with them.at that age. That was the age I finally felt comfortable driving 9+ hours as a solo adult with them. Popped in tunes that were fun for mom and kids. I made sure to take long breaks, packed picnics for those long drives on the turnpikes. I yearn for those days!

Completely depends on the kid. My eldest is 10 and doesn't really like a change in routine or new experiences. He likes swimming at pools and souvenir shopping. 7 year old likes hiking, boats and being active but absolutely hates trying new food. So neither is exactly a dream to travel with.

When everyone is fully toilet trained and can sleep through the night.

5 unless it was just something like a beach getaway and then it was all ages. But we only have one and that makes a huge difference

I’d say 5. Still a bit tiring but a 5 year old should follow directions pretty well, be more flexible with sleep, and actually can remember and get something out of the experience.

When the youngest is potty-trained, doesn't need to nap, and can stay awake past 8pm. Being a reasonably good eater helps too.

Took DD to Europe when she was 9, just the two of us, and it was awesome! She could carry her own stuff, had enough stamina to wander around, and was just filled with wonder wandering around looking at everything. It was right after COVID, so it was even more special.
In general, though, it gets a lot easier once they don't need a stroller to go long distances, can manage their own backpack with water/snacks/activities for the airplane, and they can use boosters instead of carseats.

Depends on where you are trying to go. We never traveled at all when mine were babies and toddlers. Only did beach house trips a few hours from home in the 5-8ish years. Moved on to bigger domestic cities or national parks when they were a little older. And then onto overseas trips when they were tweens and teens. It’s worked out great for us. I’ve enjoyed every one of our trips so, so much.
