So have JV, not yet JV (whatever name you want to call it) or Team A Team B and Team C which play with their counterpart teams at other high schools. If Gaithersburg HS doesn't have a Team B, but Quince Orchard does, that week Team B doesn't play or they can sub for a player in Team A.

You are also conveniently forgetting that would require more coaches, field/gym availability, and officials, the latter of which is already incredibly shortstaffed and limited among HS and youth sports because nobody wants to put up with crazy parents.

No they do not where it makes sense. There are some sports and at some schools where they make cuts. Every kid should be allowed to play. Not everyone has the resources like Larlo's family, ok?!

You can only register for one sport per season. So the initial tryout can only be for one sport.

But after that, if you don't make a team, you may have an opportunity to try out for or join another team - depending on the school and sport. Some schools have very competitive tryouts for almost every sport. Others are begging for more students to come join their teams.

I know Gaithersburg is really hurting for Field Hockey players right now. I think they only have 8 signed up so far

It really depends on the school, as a PP said. At ours, the only option would be cross country. But sometimes if a kid doesn't make the team, they can volunteer in a support role. Good luck to your daughter. Be sure not to miss the tryouts. They start around August 12. Make sure you have the physical on file so your child can participate. It has to be in before tryouts start - at least at our HS.

You could possibly join cross country if she doesn’t make soccer. Schools all have different strong athletic teams and others who are desperate so it is very school dependent.

Fall tryouts (including soccer) begin in mid-August, as you probably already know. Tryouts for all fall sports are held more or less simultaneously. At my kids' school (Blair), girls who didn't make the soccer team have joined cross-country (which doesn't make cuts) or field hockey. Cuts happen over the course of a couple of days, for soccer at least, so those who are cut after the first day or two can probably pivot to the tryout for another (less competitive) team without much difficulty, assuming the new sport's coach is told why the student missed the first few days of tryouts. Good luck to your kid-- it is really great to begin high school as a part of a team that's been practicing together for a few weeks.

Do kids try out for more than one sports team?

If they try out for one and don’t make it, can they try out for another? Or walk on? How does all that work??

DC is planning to try out for soccer (freshman) but there are so many kids trying out and she’s not the best of the best so may not make it. She’s not sure she wants to stay with her club team (it’s kinda falling apart) so I was thinking she could join another team at school but she says kids don’t do that?

Anyone btdt and able to offer guidance?
