I am 40 am also 41. Started with my current employer at age 26 (fed attorney). This was my first real long term professional job not counting my 1 year clerkship and teenage part time work.

Started at 62k and now also make around 155k. If you’re an outlier I am too.

2nd job and i have been here 25 years! I am now head a dept of 15 and make 600k+. I am going to retire from here me thinks!

You sound like my college roommate. She worked for the state (not VA) either since college graduation or shortly thereafter. She recently retired mid-50s with a pension.

I've had the same job for 14 years. Get a minor increase each year and now make close to 200K. Works for me, I have no career ambitions at this point in my life.

OP - no plans on leaving my job. I know I am pretty much stuck here. I have amazing health insurance and a hefty pension. Plus a ton of flexibility and good will from being a long time employee. I definitely have been mommy-tracked since in the 15 years of being at my job I have taken 3 maternity leaves for a total of 1 full year off of work.

PS twice I took significant pay cuts for better jobs, but I started at 21k and finished at 200k

One employer my entire life. Started at $78k, 20 years later make $400k.

DH has had 3 jobs - started at $40k and got laid off 25 years later at $400k. Hasn't been able to find work since.

If you're going to move jo s you're too late - ageism hits at about 40 - more harshly for women.

Your husband in big law? I change about every 1.5 to three years. For the 1.5 year stints, I did so at least partially because the financial conditions of my employer were flashing yellow/red. For the 3 year stints, I was always trying to build skills for a more permanent exit.

My salary progress has been $60,000 (left at $65,000) -> $62,500 (better benefits though and left at $72,000) -> $90,000 (left at $101,000) -> $125,000 (left here at $159,000+bonus but consulting hours) -> $155,000 (at $190,000 after three years and gov hours). Currently interviewing for a job that pays between $250-$300+bonus.
