I don't think enough families have mantras for this to be passe. It sounds dull as shit but most admissions essays are.

We did a tour of a slac and the person leading the information session gave a couple of ideas of essays she liked and one was about a family tradition. I say go for it!

I hate posts like this. If you think there’s any “cause and effect” involved here you’re nuts. “My kid wrote X essay and got into Y school because of it?” Nope

you should write the essay first and then have your kid and the counselor review it

I understand your impulse to ask, but maybe (after getting input from you and the counselor, but not hordes of internet strangers), your daughter should decide what she wants to write about?

Better the kid’s mantra than yours.

Did your kid make up the mantra? Can your kid say something interesting about it that sheds light on them? Does your kid want to write about it?

Not captivating is not the same as passe. I’d trust the counselor.

We have a family mantra for our household that I thought would be great essay material for DD’s application but DD was advised by her high school college counselor that it’s not captivating enough. Really?

If your kid got into college already what were they told?
