Maybe he has a wife and children. Why would they want the extra stress of out of town visitors, especially a sibling they're not close with?

As someone recovering from major surgery:

If they don’t have a regular house cleaner, if you can pay for a one time deep clean, this is the answer. We hemmed and hawed about it, but others urged it was a good pre-surgical plan and it absolutely made a huge difference.

I am a woman in my 40s, lovely things people have sent beyond flowers and meals to show they care and support me recently-
-an esoteric cookbook themed to a personal interest
-a variety of the givers favorite snack foods from trader joe’s.
-nice pajamas
-surgery recovery supplies (no rinse soap cloths)
-a good novel
-a face mask
-fun little upscale fidget toys
-chocolate truffles
-Electrolytes and an insulated cup with a handle and straw

It's definitely expensive. What soups did you pick? I stayed away from the cream soups and went for chicken and wild rice and the chili. As I said above, BIL and sister loved it.

What type of surgery? Eg will they be able to eat normally after? How long is the hospital stay? Will they be mobile after?

Long distance and somewhat distant sibling having a somewhat scary surgery soon. I am unable to physically be there, but want to send something to let them know I am thinking of them. Flowers are not an option (allergies). I was thinking a door dash gift card, but was hoping to come up with something else.
