I didn’t take the question to literally mean “where within the legal borders of Thailand should I visit” but more “I am flying into Bangkok, where should I visit from there.”

Sorry to offend you and if OP intended the former, but I mentioned Siem Reap specifically because some people don’t realize how easy it is to visit from Thailand (usually).

Siem Reap is half the distance from Bangkok that Chiang Mai is, and instead of spending your time visiting abused elephants you can visit Angkor Wat, one of the wonders of the world.

(And frankly it’s not that uncommon to see people suggesting adding Paris on to a trip to London.)

Chiang Mai was also my favourite! I didn’t make it to Chang rai though.

The Thai islands have different seasons, so for summer you’ll want to head to koh samui or koh Tao. You’ll want to avoid Phuket and koh lanta (my fave island!) because they’ll be in monsoon season.

Id say a few days BKK, a few days in the north, a few days in the islands. I prefer this order, because you go from busiest to most relaxed, ymmv but i prefer the chill island vibes over the harried city vibes.

DP. Some people say they want to travel to other countries, yet expect everything to look and function just like at home. Of course Thailand has some 5 star hotels, but I would suggest that perhaps you don't really want to see Thailand.

I would spend 2-3 nights in Bangkok and another 4-5 days in either Chaing Mai in the north or an island resort in the south like Ko Samui or ko Phi Phi.

How long are you going for? I’ve been to Thailand many times and must does depend on length of stay and what part of the country you will be in. IMO, spend no more than two days in Bangkok. Then either go up to Chiang Mai or to the beach (or both if you will be there long enough). I am most familiar with Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand and would highly recommend a visit to an elephant sanctuary. It was the highlight of our trip last time we went. But you want to be selective of which one you visit.

You know it's a big country right? Are you going to be there for 1 week or six weeks? It has lovely beaches, mountains, fabulous cities, but it will depend on the amount of time you have.

We're planning a trip for next summer and I'm interested in what other people found to be the best things to see/do. We're traveling with our young adult kids and while we have been to Thailand once, we didn't really have a plan and just kind of made it up as we went along. The goal is to be more intentional, but also to relax pretty hard.
