My experience in Maryland is that you can file right away, but they won't start paying you until the severance is exhausted. (They determine this time by looking at your prior year's salary and prorating--so if you get $20K in severance and your prior year's pay was $100K, they'll calculate your severance as 1/5 of a year.) I was glad I filed before the severance was exhausted, because that meant that once I was actually eligible to receive $, the paperwork had already been done.

Anonymous wrote:We live in MD. Husband was recently laid off. He has been telecommuting for the past 5 years. His company's U.S. office was based on VA. He just submitted the MD unemployment application this week but we are now realizing it should probably be submitted for Virginia instead. Is there a way to cancel the MD application and resubmit in VA without messing up the process? We don't want to slow things down but also don't want to double dip or do anything shady.
