If you have a fairly basic set-up, why do you need a will?

I mean, let's say you have a SO and two kids... money goes to SO, and if SO isn't around, to two kids, split evenly... right?

I understand if you start getting into second marriages or wanting to donate to charity or give money to Cousin Steve, etc. but if it's just a basic family, what's the big deal?

What happens if one of your parents has no will at the time of their death (divorced) and nobody wants to deal with the probate of the estate? Are you legally required to deal with it if you are the surviving child?
