Jansport backpacks will hold up for several years and they are not very expensive to begin with.

Second the idea applying a special theme or character patch. I have done that and my kid is just as happy. I sewed it on and just picked out a few stitches when they were ready for something else.

Also, avoid pink as she will outgrow it quickly and it gets filthy.

In a similar boat, but my kid wants the PB one. Tough to splurge on something she’ll likely only use a year (if that!).

You mean a Pottery Barn backpack? Why would she only use that a year? My kid has had hers for four years and it's going strong.

+1. Each of our LL Bean backpacks lasted several years.

I'd get one used - either at someplace like Goodwill or eBay - and pass it along when she outgrows it or toss it when it wears out.

It will only last one year but that's not the biggest deal ever. Going into K my kid couldn't have carried a larger bag, but going into 1st she's tall enough to carry the size bag that is supposed to last until 3rd grade or so.

Bonus - my rising 1st grader is bothered by how the character bag she had last year is flaking apart, and she's actively requested a better-made bag for next year.

Get a plain backpack and a princess patch and sew it on so when she’s bored with it you pick something else.

Lands End and Pottery Barn Kids typically last my kids several years. My daughter just got a Crate Kids backpack that seems like great quality.

We have liked ours from LL Bean (kid size) and they have nice patterns like animals etc.
