I think people pick Stokes for the community not the language instruction, which to be real isn’t that great. I’m a native speaker and am shocked at the number of kids who can’t really speak Spanish after being at Stokes since PreK.

I disagree. At least 80% of the parents in my kid's Stokes class were very interested in the language aspect of the school, and about half of the families speak that language to some extent at home. I'm not saying that Stokes students have a fluent grasp of the language, but the language component was definitely important to families.

Stokes can be really hit or miss depending on the individual class composition and chemistry. It’s a small school with only one class per language per grade.

We’re at Burroughs and have been happy! Our Principal won DC Principal of the Year recently.

Many of the modulars are up if you’re curious what that would look like.

I would think twice about enrolling a 5th grader in an immersion school if they don’t have the language skills. It’s tough enough being in 5th grade in general without being the new kid and being behind with the language. Burroughs and Stokes are close enough together that you can pull off both.

Stokes, if
a) you are ok taking the risk that not all kids get in and you have kids at two schools (you're going to be doing it next year with a 6th grader anyway, unless you get them all in to a PK-8 school like Inspired Teaching)

b) you are interested in sending kids to DCI...because even if your 5th grader doesn't get in to Stokes this year, I believe she'll still have sibling preference for DCI next year.

c) your kids can handle bilingual school.

Burroughs is a good school in many ways--it was a BOLD award winner in 2023 for how well it serves at-risk kids https://www.empowerk12.org/research-source/2023-bold-performance-report

If you said you were going private for middle school, it would probably be worth considering. And if you don't get all the kids into Stokes, spending a year at Burroughs is not a bad thing.

As a former Stokes Brookland parent, Stokes hands down.

Brookland is not good. Far more kids stay and complete Stokes than Burroughs.

Stokes, no question for real.

What’s your middle school plan? Stokes feeds into DCI. Burroughs feeds into Brookland MS. What is your home school? If middle school doesn’t matter then I would stay at Burroughs. Language immersion could be hard depending on your kids.

Hi all!

So all three of my kiddos placed at Burroughs from the lottery at the end of May, and NOW I've seen that my oldest girl has been removed off the waitlist and given an offer of enrollment for 3rd grade. My other two are #1 on the waitlist for 5th and 1st grade, due to sibling pref. I was all set for Burroughs next month but now am considering EW Stokes. We just finished the year in a small private school in PG County and while the kiddos have rotated taking Spanish and Korean since kindergarten, they weren't immersed in either - they were just specials. Can anyone share recent insight/opinion on either school?
TIA!
