The Amalfi coast is best appreciated from the water so taking the ferry to/from Capri will be better than driving around (leaving aside that the roads and buses are crazy busy).
Alternatively, you could hire someone to drive you to the start of the path of the gods — which is a nice hiking trail along the top of the cliffs— and hike back towards Positano.
+1. Totally agree. Boat to Capri and small or private one to take you around the island. Have lunch, wine on the boat. Swim off the boat. By far one of the best days of our Amalfi trip.
The traffic is horrible. You lose so much time. Definately do the ferry to the small towns.
Path of Gods hike was incredible and easy. Lots of steps down at the end into Positano but it wasn’t hard. Highly recommend.
