DD is a junior in HS and DS is 19. We told them they stay on the Life360 app as along as they are driving our cars.

I really don't use it very often outside of when son my be driving back from school or DD is coming/going to soccer practice.

We also have my elderly M-in-Law in our group - make sure she is where she is supposed to be for doc appointments, etc.

That being said, it was a lot different when I was their age - drove to my summer job, to visit friends, etc and there wasn't the same oversight. Tell me where you are going and let me know when you get there for certain trips was the most I got.

TV shows used to teach both respecting your kid's freedom and kids respecting their parent's responsibility and letting them know where they are.

Just like everything, you can abuse it or you can use it.

The article talks about a parent who has their kids class schedule and causing yells at them when they’re not in class. Clearly that’s an abuse..

This wasn’t in the article, but my son is part of a sports team and a bunch of parents got a call in the middle of the night saying they were in jail and needed to send money. They track their kids so they looked it up and saw their kids were not in jail. This is a good use of the tracking app.

The only time I tracked my kids when they were driving home from high school so I could figure out what time dinner was cause I didn’t like calling them because I don’t like them using their phone when they drive. And of course they would forget to text me. They were leaving school.

It’s not the technology that’s the problem. It’s just how people use it.

What's the big deal about parents knowing where their kids are? That's pretty basic for parenting.

OP here. I just want to read the article. We don't track the teens in our house. I have a coworker who is 28 whose mother still tracks her and will ask her what she was doing yesterday when she was in DC (or wherever). I think it's ludicrous.

I can't read the article--and The Atlantic now hires low-IQ young, shallow writers, so I avoid now--but what does Project 25 have to do with most crazy parents in the US tracking their kids? I never did it because it felt no different to me than inserting a chip. Were there times when I was worried and wish I knew where my kids were? Tons. But they deserved to be trusted by their parents--and to sometimes have us not know where they were.
