Where?

+1, we do last names on a lot of stuff, like water bottles.

But OP, you will use 40+ labels per kid. Clothes for daycare and for years of camp. Costumes that go to school. Backpacks, coats, water bottles. Reusable snack boxes. Dishes that go to school events and team potlucks.

I've bought new labels at least 3 times. I use Name Bubbles and put the clothing labels on everything including dishes.

I have teenagers and have done 3 label orders too! I think I used Oliver's or Mabels. Something recommended here. This the an example of the opposite of a sunken cost. You'll definitely use them. What's the risk and hand-wringing?
(and labels aren't "cute" - they are way more effective than sharpie and they stand out more on unattended items, especially hoodies, than a sharpied name somewhere that you can find a good enough contrast to write (and our names are long)).

Doesn't masking tape pretty immediately fall off?

+1
Plus, kids will pick at the labels (out of boredom while waiting to be dismissed from lunch, get picked up, etc).

You will blow through 40 labels easily the first time your kid goes to camp. Just order the labels.

Almost no one I know uses labels. That’s why school lost and founds are clogged with so many items. If you don’t want your kids’ stuff there, use labels on everything until they leave school.

I keep labels year to year. I've needed them for school, camp, then eventually college. You'll use them. They aren't expensive and ordering every year is a pain.

I usually just get the Avery fabric labels and write names with a Sharpie. Cheaper and effective.

Suggestions for a label company (there are so many)…but I don’t need 35 labels for one child. I need, like, 10 per child. I want to be able to type in 3 names and get a selection of labels.
