6 months, but I would move on.

Keep applying until you have an offer in hand and a start date.

Agree you’re probably not the first choice. But the first choice could fall through.

This would make me think I was the backup choice and they were negotiating with their first choice.

Were you updated while you waited? Did you know there was a freeze? I could handle that more than thinking I misjudged the panel interviews.

Actually now that I think about it, I only learned of the hiring freeze after I joined. But I did get weekly or so communication from the recruiter, telling me things like the team wants me but they need to wait until they can submit the request to HR. Each week it sounded like it would happen, but then it didn't. It was frustrating but it was my dream job/company and I didn't have a deadline, so I just waited.

I was called for an interview 2.5 years after applying for a job at the Smithsonian. I still regret scoffing at HR and not pursuing it.

How about if you had a lunch interview with a law firm? Should you assume you’re not getting an offer if it’s been more than a week?

Lehman Brothers is getting back to me still.

My guess is that they offered someone else and are in negotiations/waiting to see if the accept. If they don't, they may offer you. Happened to me, and I only know I was second choice because I happened to know the first choice personally, and he told me he turned it down. (Not knowing I was interviewing with them as well)

Did you take the job? If so, did you feel weird knowing you weren’t the first choice?

My DH got an offer after like 2 months? He just assumed he didnt get it, but when we were coming back from vacation (literally sitting at the airport during a layover), he got a call from one of his references who said they had just called him. He got the offer a few days after that!
