All the counting does is make up for the poor perception most of us have on coming to an actual stop. So if I count to 3 or 5 it probably works out to a just-barely stopped.

Years ago, my mom got a ticket because while she stopped, the car had not settled back. So now I make sure that I do that and have not gotten a ticket yet, although I’m not sure where there are cameras by stop signs in Montgomery County.

I wish I could say it only took me one time to learn this, but I was issued the second and third ticket before I'd even received the 1st ticket. Every ticket was $200.

I simply do not go that way anymore.

That camera would not survive on my block. It would keep catching fire until they moved it someplace else.

When you come to a real full stop, you'll usually feel the car rock back a touch. After that, you can go if the path is clear.

When I got pulled over at a stop sign after coming to an arguably complete stop, the police officer told me he looked to see whether the hubs on the wheels had completely stopped spinning to determine whether the driver had come to a complete stop. He gave me a warning.

As long as it takes to "complete stop"

There is no legal requirement other than coming to a complete stop. Driving schools offer a safe rule of thumb. But the law is full stop and proceed when it is safe to do so.

We were taught 3 seconds in driving school.

This is the case where I live too in a completely different jurisdiction. Kind of insane to have to sit there for full five seconds.

It's just a brief pause. Look around and you are supposed to use common sense...ahem.

What, if any, is the required amount of time for a car to be stopped at a stop sign?

My neighbor says it’s a 1-2-3 count, and the crew who installed the stop sign camera on the end of our street told another neighbor that you must be stopped for a full 5 seconds, which seems totally implausible to me. Bit I’ve never gotten a stop sign ticket, either.

But what is the actual amount of time you have to wait at a stop sign before proceeding?

This is in upper NW DC btw.
