There are homeless drug addicts everywhere on the West Coast. I'm a native and was just there, in multiple cities. I can confirm.

I recently stayed at The Ocean Lodge in Cannon Beach and loved it. The staff are very hospitable and the lodge offers a daily happy hour as well as a decent breakfast. Rooms were quite new and directly on the beach. I’d definitely stay there again.

OP here. Thanks for all the great suggestions! We have three days/two nights to spend on the coast. Think we will drive south from Portland to Yachats, stay one night, and go to Astoria for the second night, with some scenic stops in between. Does this sound like too much? We will not have the kids with us for this trip.

There are a lot of really beautiful AirBnBs in Cannon Beach, but keep in mind there’s some city ordinance that says that in the peak summer months (July/August) they have to rent by the week, so there isn’t a way to book a shorter stay if you’re doing a road trip. Have fun. Cannon Beach is my favorite beach on the mainland.

Cape Disappointment, WA is totally amazing. Definitely worth going there. We did that after leaving Portland and detouring to Astoria. We had a late lunch in Astoria, flew little airplanes at the column and eventually made our way to Rockaway Beach, OR. We stayed in Rockaway for a couple of nights but went to coastal areas from Cannon down to Tillamook (and toured the ice cream/cheese factor) and as far south as Florence before heading to Eugene. The dunes are great. There is a lot more to the Oregon coast than Cannon beach.

Also, to the person who said they only saw drug addicts in Portland... you must not have gone to Eugene.

How many days?

For us, Oregon coast is best enjoyed as a road trip with overnights, visiting different parts at a casual pace. We've only based ourself in 1 spot when family rents a large house.

Astoria is a solid northern suggestion, charming spot with great character. Manzanita we love for the views. For south (sand dunes, Natural Bridges, etc...) our favorite is Silver Cypress near Nesika Beach. They have airstreams with hottubs overlooking the coast. Love that place. Don't miss Old Oregon Smoke House in Rockaway.

Again, there are so many places to explore, my suggestion would be a leisurely road trip. Stop everywhere. There is so much to see.

Oregon native - love Astoria. Goonies never die! The maritime museum there was interesting, it’s in the river, you can drive to Cape Disappointment. Cannon beach is overrated, IMO, but that’s probably because we used to go there before it became so bougie/expensive. My family loves Newport, especially the Embarcadero. It’s a great location on the bay- good views, you can walk to the bay front to eat, shop, see the sea lions - easy drive to the beach, aquarium, brewery, etc. but their favorite part was that the hotel rents crab pots you can drop off the private dock and then cook the dungeness crabs at the provided outdoor stations.

Just a nice base for exploring the Oregon coast. The location on the Columbia River is very scenic. We enjoyed strolling along the river, watching different weather roll in from the Pacific, looking at the big ships come and go, watching and listening to the seals.

In addition to being close to Canon Beach, Cape Disappointment is worth exploring as is Fort Steven’s State Park- undeveloped beach and dunes, and Astoria Column.

Finally, at least a couple years ago, Astoria was much cheaper than staying in Canon Beach.

The coast is incredibly beautiful, and this is what you have to contribute to the discussion? I was there last year and drove south down the coast staying in Yachats at the Overleaf Lodge with wonderful ocean views.
