I’m the poster who pulled my kid for virtual school. Honestly, I’d see about homebound services but if you can afford it, I’d just fill out the paperwork to homeschool and pay for private tutoring and therapies in the mean time and not bother with FCPS. If you can afford it. The homeschool requirements are minimal. His health is more important right now and you can schedule things on your time when he’s able to.

Then, when he’s ready, you can enroll him back in public school.

Yes, you have the option of home-bound services. No idea if this is an indication of what they are like, but our son had a wonderful tutor who also did home-bound and she just adored every student she worked with.

Which district are you in? When my child was having too many medical issues that affected attendance in FCPS we pulled him for private virtual school. We first worked with his counselor to see if homebound would be an option but in our case, private virtual offered the flexibility he needed since we didn’t know how long he would be out. It’s not for everyone but was a huge relief for him and us and allowed him to graduate on time.

You need to reach out to the Procedural Support Liaison now. Don’t leave it up to the school. The child should have a discharge plan that talks about the best school placement, and if you don’t get something sensible, immediately go up the chain to the office of special education for the district. I was involved in a case like this and the base school felt the child had to fail there first. When I got in touch with the special education office for the district, it was resolved correctly. Don’t wait.

Take a look at Homebound services and see whether your child qualifies. If you are requesting a change in placement, I would submit that request ASAP; not sure it will get resolved before school starts.

I’d sign them up for homeschool and then evaluate when you’re ready.

What does one do when one’s disabled child can’t return to school in August? They will, I imagine (and pray) be home from the hospital by then but certainly not ready to be back even in their special Ed classroom. They’re a rising Junior and I imagine CSS or similar would be a better placement- is this something that can be looked at before the year begins? We will already be behind.
