Where? This is not an MCSL requirement and not a requirement listed in our team’s coaches ads. You can see the stark difference between requirements just browsing the current job listings: https://mcsl.org/coach-ads/

I would also argue that someone certified as a lifeguard actively coaching is different than a lifeguard stationed in a chair analyzing all surroundings for safety. Especially if they’re 16, 17, 18 years old.

Sorry- should’ve indicated this is at our individual pool. I believe at least 1 has to have their pool operator certification.

But then who is watching the pool deck to ensure no running and other unsafe horseplay?

Just because it isn't an MCSL requirement doesn't mean it isn't an individual pool requirement. Our pool requires the swim coach to be a certified lifeguard and usually the assistant coaches are lifeguard certified as well (I don't know if it is a requirement for the assistant coaches). We have 3+ certified lifeguards at each practice and yes, they are watching a set of lanes.

We don't have guards at am practice. Half the coaches are guards as well. We have a lot of coaches. Usually one per each of the practice lances plus the 2 head coaches.

We require coaches to be certified and don’t have a separate guard. There are 4+ certified coaches at any practice.

Not all, our old pool the coach was not. Some of the teens were. They always had a lifeguard except when the teens swam and there were a few lifeguards and parents there. I was not thrilled with that so I wouldn’t let my kid lifeguard there.

They are, but they say they aren’t “insured” to do any life saving things until their pool opens to members as that’s when their insurance starts. They are on the ground for the last 2 hours of morning practice, but not in chairs. They are picking up trash, vacuuming the pool, cleaning bathrooms or hiding out on their phone.

Find a new pool. That is crazy and dangerous. Sounds like a lie too.

Wow! So is our pool violated a county requirement or is our pool just cheap?

Yes, lifeguards are present whenever anyone is in the water.

If you have swim team practices when the pool is closed to members, does your pool have lifeguards out?

We seem to always require a lifeguard during swim meets but I’ve never seen one in a chair during our morning practices in over 5 years.

MCSL does not have requirements for coaches to be life guard or CPR certified or to even be background checked.

Even when my kid swam with RMSC I remember a lifeguard being in the chair.
