This. College mattresses are plastic awfulness. Definitely get the mattress topper. The rest just buy cheaper versions.

I would definitely do comforter instead of a duvet and cover. The latter will be such a pain to wash. Your goal is washing easily.
I think yes on mattress pad but I don’t think it needs to be fancy.
We did a nice thicker memory foam pad but my daughter ended up saying it was a pain because made it harder to make the bed and it sort of slipped off because those mattresses are like plastic. So I would say a thinner mattress topper or if he’s not a picky sleeper you could skip it. In fact I might slip it for now and just tell him — if the bed is really uncomfortable let me know and we can order one.
I don’t know about the sheets but I really like the nicer target sheets. They are a good price and really soft. Threshold I think they are called.

I think it’s good to have a blanket and a duvet, because you can pull up the blanket and use it as a table-like surface and have the duvet rolled at the foot of the bed.

I don’t understand why you would put a sheet between the mattress and the topper.

The key thing is what your son wants. He's the one who is going to be sleeping in it. For example, I hate duvets...does your son, I have no idea. There is really no right and wrong answer here.

Tell him to pick it. If he can't select the stuff for his own bed, he isn't ready for college.

I’m pretty insistent on natural fibers for sleeping so I don’t mind paying more for that. My kid probably wouldn’t care but I guess this one last time.

The target threshold performance sheets are great and inexpensive.

don't send a boy to college with a duvet and cover. but a sleepyhead topper is great.

If you have a kid that's a senior and there is a college close by. Just go there at the end of the term in the spring and you will be able to get almost everything you need on the curb. It's so gross.how much stuff is discarded. Almost new refrigerators microwaves mattress toppers chairs, desks lamps.... You probably don't even need to spend a penny if you just think ahead in the spring to the fall. And don't overdo it. Everyone's bringing way too much and there is so much waste.

You spend a third of your life in bed. I wouldn’t skimp on mattress topper. You can find Blankets on Amazon, sheets too, both pretty inexpensive.

there was a long thread last week about this - but for a DD shopping at PBTeen.
I also have a boy who says he doesn't care about bedding (but his frame of reference is very nice bedding). I did spring for the expensive topper because he sleeps very hot and I didn't want the off-gassing (the $50 ones are said to be heat sinks and need 3 days to "air out". And the college required the toppers be encased). I did put a mattress pad on the topper but that was unncecceary if you buy the expensive topper. Other than that, 1 sets of sheets (second came home up opened), he did use a couple sets of pillow cases and used 4 pillows (2 as a back rest I concluded). One blanket, one comforter. For towels, I send the oldest ones we have on hand. If you buy new, you need to wash them couple times first or at least ours shed for 3 drying cycles.

Please please please don’t spend a lot. Just get basic bedding. Amazon has $20 sheets that are awesome. We got some basic mattress topper.

Realize you can always get it after school starts and ship it to them via Amazon or whatever. it’s very easy to send things these days relative to when we were in school.

Realize you will have to move it all out in nine months anyway.
