There's shops and restaurants outside the gate.

I often stay on Seabrook but agree it is much more residential than resort. The houses are smaller (which is great for us). Beaches are smaller but generally less crowded. And there is a beach on the river that is a nice alternative to the ocean beach.

I have friends who stay on Folly Beach every year and enjoy it (though not sure of the golf situation).

Pawleys Island with day trip to Charleston and/or Myrtle Beach. PI is not a resort though. Been to both and prefer PI.

This- we have stayed in Seabrook, Kiawah, IOP main and IOP- Wild Dunes. You'll feel similar to Kiawah in Wild Dunes but fewer food options.

Seabrook's beach is similar but not the amenities. 1 restaurant at the golf club, 1 at the pool and that's about it. Not dissing it, its just more sleepy.
