Can you share or point me to a good site that explains this process? I am eager to try it but it feels overwhelming. Does the color come out well and does it stay permanently?

Do you all have highlighted/lowlighted hair? That's my issue. I'm scared to mess up the expensive balayage.

I do it myself to prevent disasters on my hair and going bankrupt.

I use the Ion brand from Sally’s Beauty (permanent color and developer). I leave mine on for 45 minutes. Look on YouTube for people who color their own hair. For me, the tricky part is sectioning off the hair, especially the back. You have had your hair colored previously so you have seen how the colorist systematically moves around your head in small increments. Another tip, run a bead of Vaseline around your hairline in case of drips. If you are fearful of a permanent color, try a Clairol box of in the temporary or semi permanent. Temporary washes out in 6 washes and semi permanent washes out gradually too.

I like the Wella products, and generally buy on Amazon or Sally's. I have very dark hair that lifts very orange, so I don't use box dye or "permanent" color, as the developers in those products result in brassy tones as the color fades for me. I use demi-permanent with a low volume developer (either 6 or 10 volume). My base color is around a level 3 neutral brown, so I chose a demi-permanent color that is 2-3 shades lighter, since demi doesn't lift color, it only deposits. So for me, I use a color that is a 5N or 6N. I leave it on my roots for ~45 minutes - 1 hour, and every other time I color, run it through to the ends for the last 10 minutes or so. Advice would be completely different for someone with lighter hair -- this is what works for me as a very dark brunette.

NP. Thanks for the detailed advice! I'm cutting the cord with the $120 root touchups, am eager to try this.

Np: I do this too and I use wella Demi-permanent. It fades out over time (making exact color match less critical) but reduces the prominence of the roots.

No good recommendations, but if your dye "didn't take", you generally didn't leave it on long enough. I know some instructions give something like a 25 minute processing time, but this is bunk. I leave my color on closer to an hour to cover grays. I buy separate color and developer rather than box dye...

It seems like a root touch ups these days are $150. I wish I could do it myself but when I've tried the dye hasn't taken or it hasn't looked good. Where do you go and how much do you pay? Bonus if you know someone who can do in home hair. Would prefer Arlington, McLean, Falls Church areas.
