No it's not normal. If he has significant bruising or bruising that isn't going away, it is a sign that he is in liver failure.

He is 36.

Apparently his doctor told him both his fatty liver and BE are no big deal and he can drink...I don't think the doctor understands how much he drinks!

He did try to be sober for 3 years after his BE diagnosis...but he hated it and has started drinking again starting this January. I don't mean a glass of wine at dinner. In fact, I have never seen him have just 1 glass of wine or beer...ever. 1 turns into a bottle!

And of course, I am his no.1 enemy, the "not fun" wife who is a buzz kill.

I am increasingly concerned for his well being.

We met when we were 22 so...all american friends were drinking. I did not realize...he would not stop as an adult.

I think it’s bored teens who find the site over the summer.

We drink a lot and many of us are in denial about it. We simply are. And it goes for both men and women. Drinking is so ingrained our culture that parties without alcohol are boring.

If you are non drinker married to a drinker even a casual one I am not sure if will work. Let drinkers marry one another.

This is classic alcoholic behavior. Not DCUM you are an alcoholic if you drink a glass of wine with dinner every day, real alcohol use disorder. He won’t change until he is ready, which given his existing health might be never. You need help understanding what is going on for your own health.

Second this. There are online meetings if you can't go in person. Alcohol use disorder is a progressive disease. High functioning alcoholics who can be normal during the day become non-functioning alcoholics eventually.

I'm in a family group for people with alcoholic loved ones. There are people there whose alcoholics died. It's no joke.

This is problem drinking.

Problem drinking has been normalized in many parts of American culture. So his drinking may seem normal to him. Or he may know it is a problem and not want to face it, so he’s saying you’re the problem.

There is nothing you can do to change his behavior.

You are in control of your behavior. Consider trying out a few Al-Anon meetings to hear from others in relationships with problem drinkers (many people use the “alcoholic” label, but it isn’t necessary). You may also consider seeing a counselor who has experience with addiction to help navigate this.

Do you have kids?

I hope you're a troll, but in case this is real, no, it is not normal. He's a functioning alcoholic, as are other people in his family, and he's on his way to an early grave.

The best you can do is get him to write his will and persuade him to have a binder with bank account info, etc, so you can easily access everything once he's dead.

I'm French and have relatives in my family who used to drink a glass or two (or three) of wine at meal times, every day. They gradually stopped with age, because they either can't tolerate it anymore, or have developed serious cardiac issues, the medications for which are not compatible with alcohol. But no one binged with keggers!

He has a drinking problem that has turned into a health problem. We drink and come from a drinking country. But as adults it not to black out etc. wine with dinner or bottles of champagne for a party etc. no one drinks solo when their family is asleep unless they are an alcoholic.

That is extremely not normal for a man of his age. It's not even normal for college students-- most of them do not party like that. Your husband and his family have a drinking problem. I'm sorry.

Why are you two married?

Seriously, why did you marry a man who likes to drink and comes from a family who all likes to drink? Was that not obvious and turn off while dating/engaged?

Why are you questioning this now?

My family is European and Catholic and for us it would be serving wine at dinner but no one would be getting drunk.

Obviously your husband has a huge and catastrophic health problem.

I do not come from a culture of drinking and I married an American man who comes from a white catholic family that love to party. The people party into their 60s from what I have seen. Large parties, keg stands and whole weekends related to being hungover and reminiscing the great time that was had.

My husband is similar. He does have a diagnosis of fatty liver disease and non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus. He recently went to Vegas with a friend for a week and came home with bruises on his body. Is it normal for people to drink so much that you get bruises??

In his normal week, after I go to bed, he will stay up till 4 am and drink a bottle of wine with 4-5 beers. Sometimes 2 bottles of wine. He then sleeps in till noon. When I say this is not okay he says I am just "not fun" and don't understand his culture.
