Wow you are not too intouch with academia it seems. Every professor does research. There are so many ways to get involved with research in the humanities as an undergraduate.
However, these represent social science fields.
The inability of people to distinguish between social sciences and humanities on DCUM is a nice reminder that most things here are 30+ years out of date.

Classics major at a LAC did research on ancient greek society. Professors in humanities all have research and sometimes take undergrads on summer digs to Europe. England has an ancient site that a different professor researches

1. Take a class in desired area of research
2. Excel in said class
3. Ask professor of this class to take you on as a research assistant.
If the supply of research assistants is high-professors obviously professor known students to ones who write them out of the blue with no references.
