You need to look up state laws for where you are going to see if your kid is under age or height/weight requirements. If don’t want to do that then yes, bring a booster as that is only way you know for sure compliant if don’t look up.

At that age, we’d just run by Target or WalMart & pick up a cheap one if we had a rental car and were going to be doing a lot of driving. (Since I felt it was ideal to have, but not an extreme issue to not be sitting in one on the ride from the airport)
