We're in the thick of this with baseball. Scores and stats matter, and the coaches want to know test scores before submitting pre-reads even if the school is test optional. They also want to see school profiles so they can have more insight into what a particular athlete's GPA says about her or his academic abilities. There is wiggle room, but not much---you get more if you're an athletic superstar, and some sports have more than others (football!).

There is a TOTALLY different admissions process for recruited athletes.

Comparisons of their stats to normally admitted students is pointless.

Same buildings, two different doors.

Which sport?
Football? He's in.
Basketball- if Good enough... he's in!

Have him fill out the recruited athlete forms for any school he’s interested in… see what feedback he gets.

Wesleyan could be realistic too

NESCACS range from Williams to Connecticut college. If he wants to play at conn coll or trinity, those are totally fine grades to get in even without the sport. They are too low for Williams/amherst/bowdoin full stop unless he is a top athlete coming from a top private like st albans or Sidwell. Unlikely to get into Hamilton or midd either. I think the top he could get into is a bates/colby if not a top recruit and not at a top private.

Depends on the sport, the NESCAC, and his athletic ability.

He would probably be a B band recruit at Conn College and Trinity so if they want him he should be ok.

Definitely a C band at Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Tufts, and Middlebury so not likely unless he was going to start as a freshman playing football or hockey. Hamilton and Colby are also unlikely but there might be a chance at Bates.

Definitely. Sure, if he truly is being recruited and the coach is supporting his application. In most sports at must schools, there will be at least a few students that a coach can get in with those numbers.

He should fill out the recruitment questionnaire on each school's website, found on the team's website. Also a good idea to write a very enthusiastic email to the coach. Your kid should hey a conversation going. If the coach wants your kid, the coach will ask for a preread based on grades and scores. That will give you a better idea than anyone on here can give you of chances.
