I would opt out of the placement test. Coming from a magnet school your DC absolutely wants to be in the 7th grade algebra 1 cohort. They will be basically ignored and taken for granted if they for some reason place in 7th grade math, and that status will continue all the way through high school.

What the hell are you talking about? Who says the kid can “opt out?“

“Kiddo” to many on this board is like nails on a chalkboard btw.

This is APS. They don’t have strict test in tracking. I’m sure they can talk their way into the class. It’s middle school.

Just take the test. If your kid actually learned all those things, then it won't be a problem. If they didn't, then you know. The kids who took pre-algebra in 6th grade covered A LOT of math. It's not impossible to study for it all. But it would put them at a disadvantage to just pop into algebra 1 without that prep.

Yes, take the test, but do not take it as any kind of strict measure. You do not want your kid off the algebra 1 cohort if you came from a magnet school

My kiddo’s 6th grade transcript just says 6th grade math because it was a gifted magnet school that had different groups of 6th graders in different levels of math, and though our previous school portal shows “advanced group” and I know he did 6, 7, and some 8th, the transcript doesn’t show that. The counselor is saying he has to placement test, but I’d like to avoid that. Can I just parent-place him and assume the “consequences”? If so, how? Thank you!

It’s easier to take the placement test and then justify or argue the decision

It’s fine to take the test but be prepared to fight to the mat to get into alg if for any reason it goes sideways.
