This is what we did when my daughter needed stroke technique help. Regular lessons with a junior coach outside of team lessons was all she needed.

+1 not all fixes are quick. Really depends on the thing that needs "fixing", your kid's ability to take direction, someone providing good direction, and also whether you can sustain the new technique under duress. Yes, you can fix an 8U kid who's pulling past the hip line in breaststroke, but if your kid is older is trying to fix something more nuanced and has some crusty habits, then yeah expectations should be measured.

find a year round program and regroup for next year....don't put so much expectation for such a short amount of time. Will only lead to disappointment and frustration. Focus on the fun stuff--pep rally etc

There is only a few weeks left. What’s her favorite stroke? Have one of the swim team coaches work on that one with a few private lessons, and maybe work on starts and turns. That’s all about all you can do at this point, but maybe also relax a little bit. If swimming isn’t her main sport anymore, it’s fine if she’s not getting top times

Op— Her strength is endurance—she plays travel soccer, runs track, and can comfortably handle long distances. Endurance isn’t the issue; it’s her swimming technique that’s holding her back. Her stroke mechanics need improvement, which is why I’m looking for someone who can help her fix that.

Op usually people hire the swim coaches at their summer team. They almost always offer private lessons. Have you tried that?

This post is so intense — you need to hop over to the Summer Swim Brings Out the Crazy thread.

Find a teen coach on the summer team. But it's likely to late in the season too make a real difference.

You will need to adjust your expectations.

For stroke correction I'd do 2x/week private lessons with one of your own pool's summer coaches.

On endurance, if DD is having trouble sustaining the summer race distances, she is probably having trouble sustaining the practices, too (or vice-versa). If her other sports are high-endurance (e.g. soccer), then stroke efficiency is probably an issue for her that lessons will help fix, although not completely and not right this moment. If her other sports are not quite as physically demanding as swim, it will take more time to build the endurance she needs than the summer swim season has left. You might consider a rec-level winter program to get her in the pool 1-2 times per week through the year. It is generally good cross-training for many other sports.

She needs to be in the pool 3-4 days a week, not 1-2.

(Also not sure how much you will fix in the 3 weeks you have left. This post sounds pretty intense!)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for someone who can help my daughter quickly improve her swim strokes. She used to swim competitively in both summer and year-round programs when she was 7–8 years old but took a break to focus on other sports. This year she rejoined her summer swim team, but her times aren’t where they used to be. She’s strong and athletic, but she clearly needs help refining her technique.

We’re hoping to find someone who can work with her on stroke correction and form as soon as possible—ideally before the summer season ends. We’re located in Loudoun County but are willing to drive a bit for the right coach or program.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
