Sadly. I'm hoping my alma mater can hang on, but it's going to be difficult.

A lot of the smaller schools were hit hard with the FASA debacle.
Larger schools have buffer for this uncertainty - but smaller schools don't have the flexibility to absorb a cohort not coming next year.
The delay is FASA last year impacted students on the cusp. If it was too much to complete the financial aid step - it may have been the thing on top of the other obstacles they faced in getting to college.

So assuming that's correct, I don't think we'll see big changes. Just a few colleges closing here and there.

Private college counselor I know says about 40 colleges to close very soon. A working paper predicts 80 by 2029. This also affects the wider economy: https://www.npr.org/2025/01/08/nx-s1-5246200/demographic-cliff-fewer-college-students-mean-fewer-graduates

PP is being ridiculous. I live in the Detroit Metro. I've barely heard of that school. It's 70 miles from Detroit. I Googled to find a comparison and Google says that's about the distance from Arlington VA to Kings Dominion.

We have a well-regarded local Detroit Catholic university called University of Detroit - Mercy. I know two high-achieving students who are going there because it has small classes, is very affordable, and they expect to be top of their classes which will facilitate grad school.

Some parts of the country just get unwarranted negative feedback despite a pretty good quality of life. It's just impossible to convince some people.

Pennsylvania is having far more issues and is perhaps more relevant, being closer to the DMV.

Can you still buy an old Victorian house for a dollar?

That’s right. Hopefully people keep eyes wide open when assessing options. I feel for students that need to suddenly pivot.

Have to factor in recent events. In addition to declining student population, you have potential hits to Pell grants, fewer international students (full pay), fewer research dollars, possible Medicaid hits to states which pulls money from other sources likely impacting higher ed for public’s, tariffs which raise operating costs at at time revenue is under pressure. Could be big changes, actually

It's less size than obscurity. Plenty of potential for larger institutions that are satellite state campuses closing.

Siena Heights University is a small Catholic college outside Detroit that will be closing after the 2025-2026 academic year.

I realize it’s unlikely to directly impact many here in this group, but still a sign of where things are headed for many of these smaller colleges that are struggling financially and no longer sustainable, especially with the demographic cliff. Students and families absolutely need to take an institution’s financial health into account when enrolling in college.
