Yeah, it will help your tomatoes in the hottest part of the summer but not as much ime as planting the right varieties. Don’t just use the zone, look for lists from garden clubs in the south.

It's not the heat but the sun exposure. They can get too much if in full sun for too many hours a day.

So yes, some netting to give a reduction in sun exposure helps. Not a full on opaque cover though.


To answer the Q above, yes, I believe that they are getting enough water. We water them regularly.

Just some cheap netting. Most are nylon and will deteriorate in the sun so won't last too many seasons.

My husband is also having problems with his veggy garden, but he thinks it's soil quality and is trying to improve that for this summer. Perhaps you can shade half your bed and compare at the end of the summer?
