OP: I ended up going to Ms Lee in Georgetown. The shop has a couple of changing booths and a well-lit mirror area. Picked up 8 days later (“no rush”).

I’m very happy with the dress, and also with a pair of dress pants that got taken in at the waist and hemmed.

Maybe it was silly to get the t-shirts shortened, but they are from a fancy brand, I paid too much for them, and I’ll wear them a lot more this way, i think.

How does making this comment help OP?

Presumably OP is not an immigrant and doesn't have connections to a person like this or she wouldn't have asked the question.

Yes, I have a lady who stitches clothes and does alterations. Runs business from her home. We love her. She takes a few days to a few weeks to finish her sewing job. Cheaper than any tailor or drycleaner shop.

Word of mouth. Works on western and ethnic wear. From my immigrant culture.

Most dry cleaners have an on site tailor who could do this work (I’ve never heard of having a tshirt hemmed, but seems straightforward?). Not far from you, I like the dry cleaner and tailor at the place smack at the corner of River Road and Little Falls Parkway, next to a gas station.

Yes. I’m not in your area but find a tailor shop.

I’ve bought a Staud dress, on line, not from Staud, whose waist/torso fits perfectly, but the bust needs to be taken in some. (Spaghetti straps so no shoulder issues.)

I’ve only ever had alterations done through the same store when I bought the garment. Are there places that do alterations where I can go and try on the dress in person and have them pin/mark it up on me?

Also: I’ve read about people getting t-shirts shortened. Is that really a thing? Can I just ask a tailor to do it?

Tenleytown/Friendship Heights would be great, if you have specific recommendations…
