Yeah we had a nice summer stay out there a few years ago. Definitely enough to see/do for 4-5 days Davis and Thomas have cute little downtowns, nice to go for dinner.

Thanks all for the feedback. I don’t want to check it out specifically for skiing. It just seems like a unique area geographically and I wondered if it was best to stay in old timberline in the summer given that the mountain itself doesn’t seem to have any summer activities. Sounds like it is a decent place to stay year round.

It’s not that big that you need to check it out in advance…if that’s the only reason you’re going…just book a house for skiing in the winter. It’s well run under the new owners and good at making snow, not that you’d pick that up in the summer

Dolly Sods can be pretty wet, which usually means mosquitoes, but all the times I’ve been there the mosquitoes have never been that bad.

Tucker County is around 70% state and federal land. Hiking is extensive and gorgeous.
Protip: If you want to hike in Dolly Sods, rent a house in Old Timberline. There is an access point with a parking area from within the gated community. It's on the north side of the Sods, less traveled. But you don't want to ski out here--find another place

Timberline is next to Dolly Sods, which has amazing hiking.i recommend Rocky Ridge Trail, Bear Rocks Trail and maybe checking out Lions Head. If you’re into mountain biking, stop by Blackwater Bikes. Great bike shop and great resource for local riding.
As for skiing, locally Timberline and Canaan are about as good as you can get. Snowshoe might be the best- it’s certainly bigger, but I usually opt for Timberline and Canaan since it’s a much easier drive and we also like to cross country ski at White Grass.

I’ve never been to Timberline and have wanted to ski there for a number of years. We are thinking about checking it out over the July 4th weekend and looking at houses on the mountain.
Are there things to do on the mountain in the summer? Hiking or bike trails on the ski slopes for example? The timberline mountain website doesn’t address any summer activities as far as I can tell.
We would plan to check out the area. I wonder if it is worth staying on the mountain.
Are we better off finding a house in one of the nearby towns like Davis for a summer weekend trip?
