Most people are not pushing to take AP Social Studies 3-4 years early. They take AP classes on the schedule the school has. People are pushing to take math years ahead of the schedule in the US. That is the difference.

I’m not comparing math to sports. I actually think it’s better to do physical activity when you’re young. If I had to push my child I’d push them for sports, because it’s a health gain.

The point I made was for other sedentary activities, such as reading for example. Tons of parents would rather have their child read excessively then do math. They are all ok with taking AP English or AP history or AP psychology, but lord forbid if they could take multivariate calculus.

They somehow feel that it’s better to do all those other things and not math.


It's mostly an American phenomenon.

Almost anywhere else in the world math is pretty front and center. But Americans seem to feel like math kills childhoods or some silly shit like that.

Like most things, it is a little of both. Kids like what they are good at, so if you start enrichment and acceleration at a young age, they'll start feeling successful at math and be more inclined to want to do competitive math. And if it doesn't take, they'll let you know that, too, and you adjust.

It makes it tough for teachers who have to teach to many levels in the classroom since have boatloads of outside access to math and others have none. The acceleration of math has become a scramble for parents over the past couple of decades as they push their kids to higher math before their peers—all in an effort to get to a higher college, etc. It’s become over done and over-sized just like travel sports. Everything is over-challenged in a race to nowhere as the peers will be sitting along one another in jobs eventually.

Not sure most would agree with you. Those that do accelerated math also do acceleration in all other areas too- and actually, often also in sports and/or music or other fine arts.
