My husband is the score keeper, blow up at being “wronged” type. But I don’t get it because his blow ups 99.9% of the time make things worse for everyone including him. It’s not strategic at all.

It comes with having lots of life experience. I didn’t used to be this way, now at 50 I am.

I don’t have a poker face but am fairly good at keeping calm.

I do often find it is best to take a breather before addressing an issue (really key, for me), if I am feeling at all frustrated. I either send them to their rooms, or excuse myself to run a quick errand or something- telling them “we will talk about this further later today”.

Not sure exactly how old yours are, but with my teens I often address more minor issues via text. Especially things to do with grades (asking what happened on the algebra test, or I’ll send a screenshot of a missing assignment asking what is happening there). It also gives them some time to process as well.

I am very good at keeping my cool. I have to remind my husband to not fall for our kids' antics often, though.

FWIW, I'm just a mellow person all-around. It takes A LOT to stress me out / get me worked up.

Sadly, I have no poker face anywhere. I am controlled in how I react and I typically react appropriately. I just came out of a work meeting where our guest from another company made no less than 3 horrific sexist comments. I said nothing in the meeting, but we won't be hiring them. I will speak up at the appropriate time in an appropriate manner to the decision makers - of which I am one.

I thought I was good at having a poker face through situations but with my kids I can’t contain myself. I take the bait and blow up if they don’t listen to my third request to change, get better grades, clean up, etc.

I’ve learned to get through work situations with a fake smile, etc. - as long as the situation is not for a long period of time.

How did you master it? How often do you have to do? I think my temper ( in the family) gets in the way, I hate to be “wronged.”
