They do assessments for class placement.

Yes. To pass out of Algebra I you need to have the credit AND pass the assessment, both.

I wouldn't classify it as remedial

My kid started Monday because they are getting paid through SYEP (must be 14 to get paid). This week is asynchronous. The first day, they had to research five colleges, yesterday was career focused. Today was time management. Next week is in-person. There is placement testing for math and other assessments, community building, and stuff like that. I figured it's an easy way to make a few dollars and get used to the switch to HS.

June-July, usually.

Your kid has to do the whole thing if they’re getting paid, but otherwise they can ask permission from the school to miss part. My kid missed part for a family reunion, I know another kid who missed part for a sports camp.

BSI was really helpful for my kid who was feeling nervous about going from a small MS with a handful of kids she knew also going to Banneker. The friends they made there continue to be the core of their social group years later, and it allowed them to ease into the expectations of hte school. I think being there for a few weeks without upperclassmen helped them feel more confident about starting the year, and knowing some staff members was a big plus. It was only the mornings which I didn't expect, and would have planned for them to find some afternoon babysitting or other gigs.

My rising 8th grader is thinking about applying next year. When -what month- is BSI happening in the summer?

BSI involves a lot of community building and assessments to determine placements and interventions, as well as some preliminary training so that all the students are on the same page with regard to study habits, analytical reading, etc. For students who come from middle schools that have prepared them well, it can feel a little redundant; mine was in this category and yet still really enjoyed it because they made so many friends at an early stage, joined clubs, and developed relationships with teachers.

Any insight as to what happens during those 4 weeks? My kid is a bit nervous about it all.
