What a waste. I would pay more to locate the leak, just for the principle of the thing. Maybe go to a different garage. Maybe this one is too lazy and lying his head off.
I'm the Toyota driver above and was told this same thing by my very honest mechanic on a different car once, although I think I only had to recharge it one more time a few years later before we got rid of the car for other reasons, so not every 6 months. I believe it would have been way more expensive to try to find and fix the leak than just recharge it just due to the parts that would have been needed, even if I'd have had to recharge it multiple times.
There's no way I'd give up my honest mechanic over this. He's taken care of us for about 20 years and at least 5 or 6 different vehicles. If he recommends doing or not doing something, I trust him fully.
