Subject: Pediatrician told my son he will be 6 feet tall!
Yeah, height at 14 doesn't predict at all. I know people like my brother who stopped growing at 15ish and some people like my cousin who didn't hit his big growth spurt until 16 and grew while in college.

We went for his annual physical and the pediatrician told him he’s likely to be 6’. My son was thrilled! The thing is DH and I are both short. I’m 5’2” and DH is 5’5”. There’s no way DS is going to be 6’. I’m shocked that the pediatrician would say something like that.
DS was going on about it after the appointment and I just kept reminding him that there’s no way to accurately predict height and that he needs to be okay with however tall he end up being.

13 is in the average range. He is not early, he is actually closer to being on the late side. The sites I am looking at say that 14 is late for puberty. My DS is going to be 13 in a few weeks and has not started puberty, his Doctor isn’t worried but he is one of the last ones in his group of friends to start puberty. All the rest have been growing, have facial hair, and their voices are changing.
The height prediction is probably off but that has nothing to do with when he started puberty.

It’s not impossible but it’s unlikely. The pediatrician should never have said that.

My son was on track to be 5'11. Which is his dad's height.
He started puberty at a normal time but on the earlier side.
He is 5'6". So exactly like most of the men on my side of the family that he takes after. Going back 2 generations.
My younger son is a different body type and taller...5'7-ish.

Ugh.
I hate those charts and growth predictors.
My DS is 14.5 and 5’9”, convinced he will be 6’0”+ since some online calculator say so (and his older brother is, sure). But pretty much anyone could look at my DS and realize he is about done growing. I don’t say anything about it to him either way, but I’m 99.5% sure he is going to be disappointed.
The online calculators are one thing but it is another thing for a pediatrician to be doing it…..I’m sure the ped didn’t mean anything by it, but probably not a good idea.

Ugh. Seems really unwise on the ped’s end. Especially the way teen boys obsess about height.
I’d write a (very kindly phrased) email letting them know of potential issues with doing this. I’m not saying it is a crucial issue or anything, but maybe they will be a little more measured about doing it in the future.

The doctor might be right. Was she looking at a chart when she said it? A chart that goes by previous heights? My kid's pediatrician accurately predicted his adult height within one inch.
