In America, I think camping is popular among white people. I don’t see it much with other ethnic groups, aside from the tent encampments set up by the unhoused.

Maybe people feel like they need to enjoy the outdoors before we can't anymore due to climate change? I have no idea. I am fourth-generation NYC, and my people don't go camping. I had to do a camping thing in 6th grade with school and hated it. My sibling was close with a guy who hiked and camped a lot and took a trip through the Grand Canyon or Yosemite or somewhere. He said they started out walking through a low lake and halfway through if he'd known how to get back to the car he would have run back. Needless to say we won't be taking the 5th generation.

Nature culture. It's now prestigious to get park reservations. Same reason ppl now wear Patagonia vests. A lot of friends with 3 kids can't afford plane fare or lots of hotel rooms. So they got an RV and explore that way.

I am too old for camping.

I love kayaking and hiking but hate camping.

There are different versions of outdoorsy. Personally, I love indoor plumbing and a proper bed, but otherwise love being outside in nature.

I grew up in a family that had never/would never go camping. Now I see everyone and their mother owns an rv and kayaks. When and why did this become so popular?
