I love Hillwood. I would recommend the biography American Empress by Stuart though.

Hillwood is amazing, if you can get past the Excessive Wealth Disorder that is on display everywhere you look. The main house/ museum part has a whole bunch of Faberge and other art from imperial russia. (I think one of her husbands was an ambassador?) The dacha house has rotating exhibits, often fashion-related. "Dior through the ages" and stuff like that. And the gardens... swoon. Go when it's not miserably hot and humid and plan to spend plenty of time outdoors. The cafe is overrated/ overpriced, but they do the best they can.

In case anyone else wants a fun idea - my book club usually meets at people's houses but we go on one book related field trip a year and this year we read the Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post and visited the Hillwood Estate for our book club field trip. I really knew nothing about her before I read the book and it was really cool to learn about her and then visit her house!
