I have them use their old tennis shoes or get them water shoes, an old lunch kit, and an old backpack and just leave them outside. I don't try to clean them if they are just going to get muddy again. Then you only have to deal with the clothes and you can toss the rest at the end of summer or just clean them once or twice.

Camp clothing comes back home muddy from top to bottom. I rinse them first, and then throw in laundry machine daily for the last few days. The shoes are muddy, so do lunchbox and backpack. Kids have good time, but I don't have good time doing that every single day. I think it is due to rainy weather, everywhere are muddy. How do you wash them?
