DS has a friend at School X whose roommate got off the waitlist for School Y. Roommate remaining at school X looked for a replacement, but ended up with a single all year. He didn't love it but made the best of it.

Tell the roommate ASAP so that person can look for a replacement!

This happened to DD. Had plans to room with hs friend ,(not really same friend group but some she knew). Both were also on wl at a different school. DD got in from wl. Roommate did not. They are still in touch today. Life happens No recollection now of how the news was communicated.

She should just use whatever normal method of chatting they use. If phone, cool. If text, fine. If DMs through Instagram, cool. Doesn't matter. Rip the bandaid off, though.

Congrats. She has a new hometown friend. They can hang out at Thanksgiving when they're both back from their respective schools.


I disagree. The kid not switching schools deserves to be told by voice. That’s the personalized way to do it…

*You* don't deal with the roommate. You coach your adult child through sharing the info with *their* roommate.

Agree, but it’s definitely not H and Y on this scenario with the bestie thing. Do what needs to be done, sparing a kids feelings they barely know isn’t worth sacrificing a better college choice. The way you worded equation doesn’t make it sound official though?
