Your DC should be able to try out in August with a form based on a physical done last Fall, and especially if there's a chance they won't make the team, paying for a physical now seems totally unnecessary, when you can submit a new form in Sept or Oct if need be. But I would just ask your school's athletic director or the team coach for guidance.

And to answer a different question, you need to register for each sport, each season and each time have an up-to-date physical. So if your physical expires in November and you are registering for a winter sport, you'd need a new one then.

What about if he's also interested in a Winter or Spring sport? In other words, is it valid throughout the whole year, or does it "expire" exactly 13 months later?

I there a reason your child doesn't get an annual physical?

Ummm, he does? His birthday is actually in the summer, but the ped's office keeps wanting to schedule it at least a year after the previous one, so this is where we're at. So if I went to them and asked them for a physical now, they'd probably say no (can do a quick one at the Urgent Care, but I don't want to unless it's necessary.)

It seems like I can just submit it now and then have them redo the form after his next physical, to keep him current.

Our pediatrician tries to do the same because the office staff thinks our insurance will only cover the next physical after one year has passed, which is not accurate with our coverage. If you're insurance covers an exam now, let them know you're ready to schedule it.

Or if you can pay cash, indicate that to the office/doctor if you can't/don't want to wait for the insurance. Our practice is so compassinate about income limitations (which I totally support) that they will sometimes just not offer or discuss elective options if they would require non-insurance payment.

It expires exactly 13 months from the date of the exam, regardless of when the form is completed. And your kid will get pulled if it’s out of date.

DD wants to try out for a team but I know they have to have physicals. Does the physical need to happen this summer or could it have been last fall? Does MCPS require a copy of the paperwork?

If your child's physical was last fall, you can ask their pediatrician to complete the pre-participation physical evaluation form (I just dropped it off, they filled it out, and I picked it up and submitted to school). Once you've submitted that form you should be good to go for 13 months. Hope that helps.

It’s 13 months from the date of the physical not the date the form was filled out. And you have to have a new one on file as soon as the old one expires or your kid can be pulled from sports.

Our AD is a stickler and you get a notice that your kid will be pulled if you don’t get it updated. Honestly if your kid is trying out for a Fall sport, the easiest thing to do is have it done in late July or early August, depending on how fast your doctor is at doing the forms.

Also you probably know this but in case you don’t, tryouts for fall sports are the first full week in August and some sports have multi day tryouts.

Good for a year but we always get a new one in the summer to keep it simple.

"Pre-participation Physical Evaluation Form -

The Pre-participation Physical Evaluation Form is valid for 13 months (for high school athletes) and two years (for middle school athletes) from the date of the exam, and covers participation for all sports within that time period. Parents/guardians submit the last page to the school/coach (the Clearance Form). Schools keep the forms on file. A partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online."
