It’s a national holiday as a result of the George Floyd killing and our need for kumbuya. Yes, it commemorates when the last blacks knew about their freedom in Texas. The Emancipation Proclamation was of enormous consequence but why not combine it with MLK Day as has been done with Presidents Day. More than half the states don’t see it as a holiday. The Feds get a holiday but the rest of us don’t.

Pray tell, why hasn’t July 4th gone away since Juneteenth was adopted?

Surely you have something to back that up, right?
Opinion pieces don’t count.

He probably hasn’t even noticed — or doesn’t remember — a newer holiday that doesn’t center him.

Once I was old enough to understand what “Independence Day” actually celebrated, I didn’t really celebrate it in any meaningful way. This year, I might try to plan something that celebrates the ideals of the United States, while doing something more community oriented for Juneteenth.

The celebration of the true end of chattel slavery in our country is not specific to Texas, nor is it specific to Black people. It's absolutely something our entire country should celebrate, and history we should all know. The apathy around history having to do with Black Americans as though it is not also American history is kind of gross.

Then why hasn’t it happened? I’d wish they had given us Election Day instead, but will take a June holiday. 4th of July is going nowhere.

OMG the conspiracy. Does this even make sense when you think it out? Come on. You can do this...

The federal adoption is an attempt to replace July 4th.

I expect a half coherent message about bringing Black jobs back and republicans freeing the slaves.

I doubt he does anything about it. He is kind of weird about Black people.
