It’s a lot easier if there is some racial and socioeconomic diversity at school.

It’s mostly accurate. When I had a lot of parents come to back to school night, I’d tell them to sit anywhere. You’d be surprised how many parents unknowingly sat in their own kid’s desk. It always tickled me. But mostly they do look like their kids and act similar enough you can make a pretty good guess.

I had a teacher say the same thing to me. She also told me that I sat down on same desk that DD sits during class.

There may be a bit of truth to it, but he is also probably basing this on appearance as well (even if unknowingly).
Some kids look SO much like their parents. A lot do not, but many do. One of my DD’s looks exactly like me, for example. It would be very easy to identify us as mother/daughter. (My other 2 DC don’t look like me nearly as much).
A lot of kids that we know very strongly resemble one parent or the other (enough that it would be pretty easy to match up). Obviously not all.

Perhaps it depends on the family, but for us, this teacher's comment is spot on.

Sounds like a cool circus trick. Issue a challenge to this teacher next year. It’s true, some kids are very similar to their parents, but not always. It’s like dogs and their owners.

It's hit or miss because I definitely know some middle school kids who are the spitting image of their parents, including mannerisms and language. On the other hand, I doubt anybody would be able to match me to my children who look a lot more like their father's side of the family.

I mostly agree. In many ways, our kids are very similar to us. But some of those things aren’t immediately obvious. But, I can believe there are a lot of tiny “tells” that we aren’t aware of that would identify us.

My kids get on my nerves because they have their dad's mannerisms.
Everything they do remind me of his annoying a$$.
We are not together ...haven't been in 9 years the whole point of being away is to not have to still have his mannerisms in my home. Ugh

Agree, my two kids are different from each other in looks and mannerisms. Moreover, one takes after my DH and his side of the family and the other to me and mine. There is very little resemblance between DD1 and DH. If your teacher friend saw DH at her BTSN, I don’t think he’d be able to guess that they are related.
