I don't know about the girls side. For sure, lots of "transfers" for mysterious reasons in boys public.

A true bench player may barely play unless it’s a blowout. There will be some non-starters who play a decent amount though and aren’t truly “riding the bench.”

But also remember, most varsity coaches won’t take a player and waste a spot on someone they never envision playing. So either she’s got potential for this year or next year to play some amount. This is where she should tune in to the coach’s development plan and work hard in the areas advised.

Are players 6-8 on bench not quite considered "the bench"?

Most Varsity coaches will consistently sub in 7-8 players. Players 9-14 are the true bench.

Can player 11 become player 7? Can player 8 become a starter?

Sure, at a school where the coaches don't recruit transfers.

If you break someone's ankle in preseason practice you might get some playing time. It's how I got a varsity letter. Though it was his fault for stepping on my foot, thinking he was going to get a runaway dunk and didn't see me standing there in legal guarding position.

At my DD's NOVA public, the varsity girls basketball coach plays 6-7 players only. No one else goes in unless at least a 25 point lead.

What level? And what HS? Completely depends on how good of a program the school has.

Varsity. DD is coming out of the JV prog. Not going to name the HS for conf. purposes.

Stupid question. ( didn’t go to school here) if your kid is on JV and playing games do they “ have” to move to V?
I have a riding 8th grader who loves soccer and basketball so paying attention to these threads now.

As opposed to staying on JV? If your kid is offered a spot on V, you take it. Unfortunately that can lead to bench time.
