We are POC and prefer Rehoboth. It’s very very diverse in many ways.

Rehoboth is very diverse and LGBTQ friendly.

Rehoboth is probably the best choice for inclusivity, but Dewey will have more young people their age.

The beaches in Maryland were segregated way later than the DC-area part of MD. For example, at North Beach, MD my father went there as a kid and they had "Whites" and "Colored" signs at the snack bar and bathrooms. Tha'ts why nearby Carr's and Sparrow's beaches were established -- they were open to black people.

Ocean City, MD was segregated up until the mid 1960's. They had "Colored Excursion Day" just after Labor Day, after the season was over, for Blacks to come to the beach. They would take that opportunity to sell any leftover merchandise from the summer.

Unfortunately it’s a reality faced by many people in this country. Rehoboth would be a great and welcoming place to visit. Dewey is fun for an evening, but overwhelming.

Unless they are into the bar scene, which is fine although not by choice, Rehoboth is a much much nicer place to vacation. Minorities and LGBTQ community very present in our experience.

The racist, transphobic and misogynist shirts, signs, etc along the board walk in Ocean City made some of my family members feel very uncomfortable. Rehobeth was more accepting, but family stayed away from the boardwalk at night. I'm not sure we'd go to Dewey. Its a drunkfest of 20 something white straight consultants.

I will also give OP credit for the question, although her son is a little old for mom's help. It could be tough to find a place that welcomes both. Myrtle Beach, for example, is very diverse and there are a lot of Black families there individually and for large family reunions. However, I wouldn't say it's welcoming to gay couples.
