Whatever the amount would have been for the meal plan on campus, we give directly to the kids. One chose to keep a low meal plan (maybe 10-12 swipes a week), and we gave them the difference.

We peg it to the on campus meal plan, which is $3k. Semester is roughly 4 months which works out to $750 per month p

The answers on these threads are always all over the place.

Some give nothing. Some give unlimited access to credit cards and memberships (Amazon, Netflix, etc).

You have to figure out what’s right for you.

Please do a search. This has been asked half a dozen times in like the last month. There's a wide range.

$750 per month plus rent. So it covers food, all bills etc.

That’s a lot of beer

He mainly drinks cocktails, not beer.

1000 is for whatever. I pay tuition and rent directly. He has a credit card that is my account (he is a card holder) that he uses for school supplies, fees and groceries. The 1k is for everything else. He goes to school in an expensive city.[/quot

Why why does he spend 1k a month in addition to all of the essentials you list that you cover? I have one adjacent to a city and there is no need for that kind of $ as a student. No wonder young grads think they cannot afford life on a grad school stipend of 45k-50k and will have “no way” to pay down med school loans and start small 401k savings on the 75k a Resident makes. Good golly.

1000 per month in addition to housing/utilities? Thats crazy.
$400-500 a month for food/toiletries/misc in addition to rent/utilities, if there is no partial food plan pre-paid to the college. Depends on cost of food at local store. Depends if they have a car and need gas$ too

I'm trying to figure out how much to give my rising junior to cover living expenses since this is her first year off campus. Entertainment would hers to cover, but I'm ok covering food (within reason), etc. I'd like to determine a recurring monthly amount to deposit in her bank and let her figure out how to make things work. Ideas?
