IB will be looked at more favorably. My kids went to an IB high school, but because they wanted to be in band, they couldn't fit to the IB schedule. It probably hurt them for higher level admissions, but they still went to a highly ranked school (top 30) and were very happy.

Yeah, it's funny. My IB kid had a more demanding HS experience and was better prepared for college, but my AP kid started college with ~twice as many credits. (If I had a third kid, I'd go IB if they could handle it.)

Tell that to the crazy anti-IB people in the FCPS forum.

Depends on what college. My kid went from following an IB track to just getting a standard diploma, and was accepted into all the universities they applied to, mostly public.

My assumption would be that colleges will notice that your kid didn't do the most rigorous program possible.

Also, FWIW, the other kids in the IB program will be more intelligent and motivated generally speaking than in the other classes.

Are you talking about the Career Programme or DP?


No, I’m talking about taking all honors classes and IB classes in 11th and 12th where applicable. DC is entering HS next year with three HS-level classes (2 of them honors) so was just wondering. The path they required him to fill out in Naviance (which is notional at best) is for an Advanced degree.

The Virginia advanced degree is not even something that is visible to colleges. It is also not very rigorous. Most IB schools let you take IB classes a la carte. A mix of honors and IN classes is a good plan if a full IB diploma is too much for a student.
