My kids want to STEM public magnet programs in MoCo. I made sure that each summer they were going through week long intensive Math courses at Montgomery community college for revision of past courses and upcoming math courses during the new academic session. We did not pay for any other kind of outside help.

There should be no shame for learning and working on Math or any subject for any kind of students. My kids were top performers and remained so in college.

Edmund Burke does for students entering 7th/8th (don't have to be a Burke student). Here's what I found:

7th/8th Grade Math Brush-Up | Grades 7-8 | 9 AM - 12 PM
Students will refine their skills prior to pre-algebra and algebra through targeted problem solving, games, and collaborative math work.

Stone Ridge offers this. Not sure if it’s open to outside students though

Our school has one, but DD will be at summer camp and unable to attend so I downloaded the syllabus and we’ve just been working there in the concepts together. That paired with the summer math work will suffice for us.

Stigma? Like your kid isn’t strong at math so they’ll be treated like they aren’t strong at math and as such given more support? My kid isn’t strong at math. I can’t imagine what sort of negative stigma could be associated with that. Not everyone just “gets it” some people have to work at it. What’s wrong with that?

Think it would be an overwhelming positive, assuming it is taught well. Well give the kid confidence heading into their next math course, no stigma at all.

One of my kids took this kind of course at GDS before high school started. It was a great experience for her. Small class and very old school teacher who really drilled down on some of the basics (like factoring for my daughter) that can trip up kids. She was coming from a K-8, so also was an early chance to meet future classmates. It kept her busy and mentally engaged, but wasn't overwhelming. It also isn't graded or put on the transcript, so no grade pressure. And no stigma either. She went on to be a fairly good math student through Calc and stats over the next four years. I'd view it as a plus that your child's new school is offering or requiring it.
