This system, Timatic, is the system used by airlines to confirm document requirements when checking docs for getting boarding passes and getting on the plane. It's updated constantly.

If you put in a trip to Guatemala all it says is that for US passport holders it just has to be valid on the date of entry.

It's very hard to find dispositive information on this from the Guatemalan government, apparently. The US State Department page says the same thing as Timatic, which is a good sign but not the official word, since it's Guatemala who makes its entry rules and not the US State Department.

But I'd go with the Timatic info, that's what the airlines use, and I am 95% sure the airline agent was just responding with their script of "6 months" since that's a good general rule and is cautious.

Thanks everyone. I’m trying to move heaven to earth to get her to come, but now she’s refusing to go. At the very least she’ll get her passport renewed with the regular turnaround time and will hopefully make the next trip.

Yes good point, the "6 month" rule is a good general guideline but not actually a rule for many countries. OP, where are you going? Not saying the airline lied to you, but front-line agent don't often have good specific info in my experience.

Yes, but you do need the plane tickets purchased. And it's not an issue getting it done, assuming you can get an appointment. You don't need the ticket to book the appointment, but you need it at the appointment.

There is a separate process for "life or death" travel, that seems to be the question you are asking. The linked option is indeed for quickly upcoming, non-life or death travel.

We are taking my grandmother on a last minute trip and just realized that her passport expires in five months. We called the airline and they won’t let her fly with it being so close to the expiration even if our trip is in two weeks and our trip is only for one week.

Can you get an expedited passport for a leisure trip? This is not life or death. We leave on the 20th and hope she can come.
